Ear Candling
The external ear canal has glands that secrete a yellowish, sticky substance known to many as earwax. This has the function of protecting the ear from dirt and fighting infections. However, there are times when excess earwax is produced in the ears.
Earwax (cerumen) blockage occurs when earwax accumulates or when people try to remove earwax from their ears themselves with cotton swabs or other items. This usually only pushes the wax back into the ear instead of removing it. The wax becomes too hard to be removed naturally, and treatments such as ear candling must be used.
Symptoms
The following may be signs and symptoms of wax blockage:
· Ear pain
· Sensation of swelling in the ear
· Ringing or buzzing in the ears
· Hearing loss
· Dizziness
· Cough
· Itching in the ear
· Ear odor or discharge
· Ear pain or infection
What does the treatment consist of?
It consists of placing one end of a conical candle in the ear and lighting the other end. The heat generates a suction effect that causes cerumen and other impurities to come out of the ear canal.
